I know it's time to switch over to our Slow Road Home discussion (and I have already read a decent chunk of it), I wanted to see if there were any more comments about Cosimo of the Trees.
For some reason, this is a slow read for me. I don't know if it's that whole coming from another language thing or something else, but I haven't been able to plow through it.
But I am compelled enough that I know I will finish it eventually - I'm halfway through right now. I dig the notion of Cosimo, with his tanned hide clothes and delicate bathroom procedures and his running about from tree to tree and now, with his little hunting dog!
And it's become clear that he is in the trees for the long haul, year-round for the rest of his life perhaps, and I find that idea cool. I guess it just isn't a page turner, at least for me.
Anyone finish it and have comments?
By the way, on Slow Road Home, I had emailed Mr. First to ask him a question about self-publishing, and he responded and was very helpful. AND, he sends his regards to our little book group here. So, regards.

I loved reading about Cosimo until I got through the part about the Spanish courtiers in the trees. Then I got bored with it. I, too, found the idea of living in trees a very cool idea, Dan - sort of a Swiss Family Robinson kind of thing from my childhood. But the part I liked the best in the book was near the beginning, when Cosimo observes the variety of trees in the neighbouring garden. Then, throughout the first part, there were descriptions of the natural history of the area from an aerial perspective, which I also enjoyed. In the second half, it became more about relationships, and since I really didn't like any of the characters very much, with the possible exception of Cosimo's brother and the little dog, I lost interest. I guess I was hoping for more about emphasis on the nature writing. I don't fault the book, which I think is well written; rather, I fault my preconceptions and hopes of it.
